Dan Bethell PLY

Badminton

I was born with cerebral palsy, but I never let that stand in my way.

Growing up I played many sports including rugby, tennis, football and cricket. I started playing badminton after watching the 2008 Paralympic Games and being inspired by seeing these amazing athletes with disabilities doing unbelievable physical feats. After a quick google search I found out about Para-Badminton and then went to my first competition in 2010.

I compete in the SL3 category which means I play on one half of a conventional badminton court

I then went on to win multiple medals in both men’s singles and men’s doubles including winning 3 European Championship Gold medals in men’s singles and 4 World Championship medals including a silver medal in mens singles at the 2019 World Championships in Basel Switzerland.

My greatest achievement to date is becoming the first British Badminton Player to win a medal at the Paralympics when I won a silver medal in the SL3 Men’s singles at the Tokyo 2020 games. 2022 has been the best year of my career to date. I have gone undefeated with a record of 21-0, won 4 international titles and became World Number 1.

Alongside my athletic career, I have obtained a law degree and a masters in International Commercial Law from the University of Bristol. I am keen to share my own experiences to show the importance of embracing diversity (I wrote my masters thesis on the importance of having diversity in leadership roles/UK Boardrooms) and showing how a having a positive mindset when things get hard can help you unlock your potential.
