Squash

Declan James is an English Professional Squash player for England, from Nottingham.

Declan has been on the professional tour for 12 years, having turned professional aged 18. He has over 40 England caps and together with the England team won Gold at the 2019 European Team Championships, and Silver in the 2019 World Team Championships.

He reached a career high ranking of 15 in the world in that same year, and became England’s number 1 ranked player. He has 13 world tour titles to his name. In 2018 Declan represented England at the Commonwealth Games on the Gold Coast where he won a Bronze medal alongside doubles partner James Willstrop. The duo went on to win Gold in the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games in front of a home crowd, the crowning moment of Declan’s career to date.

Away from the court Declan is passionate about inspiring the youth, and speaking to people around the concepts of having a growth mindset, fulfilling potential, and exploring our purpose in life and why we do the things we do, as well as how we can live life to the full. He has spoken in schools to classes around the healthy lifestyle that life in sport offers, and enjoys public speaking to schools, businesses, and institutions alike.

In 2018 Declan was named Nottingham Sportsman of the year, and in 2022 received a Golden plaque from Commonwealth Games England to donate to his club of choice (Nottingham Squash Rackets Club) following his success at Birmingham 2022.
