Adventure Cycling
As an explorer/adventurer, Kate has cycled almost 100,000km – two and a half times the Earth’s circumference – on her major journeys.
She has successfully completed expeditions on all seven continents and attained four world firsts. Educational and humanitarian missions are always an equally important part Kate’s projects. She has published two books and produced award winning films and TV series.
Major expeditions for which Kate is best known include:
1. Trans-Siberian Cycle Expedition – 13,400km, five months; from St Petersburg to Vladivostok in aid on the children of Chernobyl, 1993
2. Great Australian Cycle Expedition – 25,000km through Australia; included the first woman bicycle crossing of the Canning Stock Route by a woman. Official Activity for the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (2004/2005)
3. Breaking the Cycle in Africa – 22,040km, 10 months, 20 countries; from Senegal to Somalia exploring the causes and effects of extreme poverty. First person to cycle from Africa’s most westerly to its most easterly points in a continuous line. Official Activity for the UN DESD (2009/2010)
For several years, Kate has been preparing for Breaking the Cycle South Pole, which will be the first bicycle crossing of the Antarctic continent via the South Pole. In preparation she has completed polar training in Svalbard, Northeast Greenland and Arctic Canada, and preparatory expeditions – in polar conditions, on sand or at altitude – on every continent.
Up next
In March 2025, Kate will begin an epic 10,000km journey through Central Asia. She will follow the course of the Syr Darya (Jaxartes River) from its source in the Tien Shan, Kyrgyzstan to the Aral Sea, and from there, trace the Amu Darya (Oxus River), concluding with a search for its undiscovered source in the Wakhan Corridor, Afghanistan.
Outcomes from the Breaking the Cycle Central Asia project will be an education programme (in partnership with Canadian-based organisation, Exploring by the Seat of Your Pants (live and recorded lessons and updates complementing a set of learning resources), a TV series, book and more.
Kate is now setting up the Breaking the Cycle Foundation to magnify the value of her legacy; to help alleviate poverty, support the environment and achieve equality as well as educate tomorrow’s leaders.
