Sprinter
Toby Harries OLY is a distinguished sprinter, academic achiever, and Olympic medalist whose journey in athletics and science has left a profound impact on and off the track.
Toby began his athletic career in rugby, competing across the South of England and in the Harlequins Elite Development Academy before switching to sprinting at 16. His transition proved successful, with championships and accolades including U20 European Champion and two-time British Indoor 200m Champion. 2024 saw Toby switched to the 400m, securing Team GB’s qualification for the Paris Olympics in the Bahamas World Relays and earning a bronze medal in the Men’s 4x400m relay.
Behind his athletic success lies an impressive academic background. Graduating with a first in Biological Sciences from UCL, Toby specialized in the origin of life, working to uncover insights into how early DNA evolved. This expertise fuels his passion for high-performance nutrition and a scientific approach to training, honed alongside coach David Sadkin, who is currently pursuing a Ph.D. in biomechanics. Toby’s biology expertise drives his disciplined, analytical approach to elite performance.
Toby’s path hasn’t been without challenges. He has battled through numerous injuries, including two major surgeries early in his career: one for extensive cartilage damage in his right knee and another following a Grade 4c tear that ruptured his hamstring off the bone, deeply threatening his career. Defying these odds, Toby redefined his limits and returned to the world stage, claiming a bronze medal in the Men’s 4×400 in Paris.
Through his 180-day journey to Olympic qualification shared on Instagram, Toby has inspired many and is committed to making sport a powerful force for mental health. Recognizing essential links between physical activity, community, and mental well-being, Toby envisions communities empowered by physical activity. He hopes to see local heroes inspire confidence in youth, young adults gain resilience back getting back into local sport, and older adults find purpose through supportive roles, as they often do in Track & Field.
