Kent innovation The Shuffler is helping make movement more accessible for people who find conventional exercise difficult.

A simple Kent-designed fitness device is helping people who struggle with traditional exercise to get moving – without even having to leave their chair.

As the nation marked National Fitness Day on 16 September, the creators of The Shuffler are calling for a broader conversation about who fitness is really for.

The Shuffler is a simple, portable device designed to enable gentle, repetitive lower-limb movement while seated. It offers an accessible way for people who may find standing exercise difficult – including older adults and those living with reduced mobility – to incorporate more movement into their daily routine.

National Fitness Day, organised by ukactive, celebrates the importance of physical activity and encourages people of all ages and abilities to find ways to get active.

For Shuffler co-founder and inventor Lee Trainor, that message could not be more personal.

“National Fitness Day is about recognising that everyone deserves the opportunity to be active,” said Lee.

“That is exactly why we created The Shuffler. Not everyone can exercise in a conventional way, but that shouldn’t mean they are excluded from movement altogether. Sometimes, the best place to start is simply where people are – and for many people, that is sitting in a chair.”

Lee developed the original idea after experiencing mobility problems caused by spinal stenosis. He found that some conventional seated exercise equipment was uncomfortable and difficult to use, inspiring him to create a simpler alternative.

He later joined forces with Kent GP Dr Jim Kelly, who has more than 25 years of NHS experience and a particular interest in musculoskeletal medicine.

Together, they developed The Shuffler into a commercially available product that is now being used by people in their homes and across community and care settings.

The innovation has attracted support and engagement from organisations including Innovate UK, the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme, Health Innovation Kent Surrey Sussex, Sport England and the NIHR HealthTech Research Centre in Rehabilitation.

Community projects involving The Shuffler have also generated growing interest in how simple, accessible approaches to movement could support older people to remain active, engaged and independent.

Dr Kelly believes National Fitness Day is an important opportunity to challenge perceptions about exercise.

“Fitness isn’t just about gyms, running or high-intensity workouts,” he said.

“For many older people, or people living with mobility challenges, simply finding a comfortable and achievable way to move can be the first step towards becoming more active.”

“We need to make physical activity more inclusive. The Shuffler is designed to provide one simple option for people who may otherwise feel that exercise isn’t for them.”

The team behind The Shuffler is now working with community organisations, care providers, researchers and health professionals to gather further real-world evidence and explore how the device could complement existing activity, rehabilitation and healthy ageing programmes.

As National Fitness Day approaches, their message is simple:

Movement should be accessible to everyone – whatever their age, ability or starting point.
